TIPS TO AVOID THE SUMMER SLUMP
Remember when you started training, how much harder everything felt? Then after a few weeks you got in the groove, you were consistent and it felt AMAZING...right? You had more energy, you had a routine, you were seeing progress, you ...felt...GOOD. Well, unfortunately when you take a big hiatus from training, it is a big set back.
It’s summer - it’s natural to want to chill a bit, and you SHOULD, but remember one thing as you start to slide into laid back summer mode...Starting over SUCKS. If maintaining a strong and healthy lifestyle is still a priority for you.. you need to figure out a way to maintain some semblance of consistency in your training.
If you are feeling motivation wavering and are struggling to adjust to a summer schedule...
Here are a few tips to help you right the ship:
LOOK AT YOUR SCHEDULE
like really, look at it. Summer's change things, your schedule may be different so that means your training schedule may have to be as well. You may need to train at time slots that are new to you and try new things. Get it on the calendar and stay committed!
MAYBE A CHANGE OF SCENERY
if you can’t get to your normally scheduled sessions at your favorite gym (which is OF COURSE MSC...RIGHT!?). You can try open gym times where there are no classes (like, at MSC...RIGHT!), workouts at home, or even outdoors. Mixing it up isn’t a bad thing, change of scenery can help make things a little new and exciting.
REASSESS YOUR GOALS AND FIGURE OUT WHAT IT WILL TAKE
Ever hear the term “Minimal Effective Dose”... it means, figuring out the smallest possible amount of work that needs to be done to achieve your goal. You may work out 4-5x a week now, but really, could you get where you want to be in less? Maybe the “goal” is to just maintain rather than progress. Take a hard look at how you want to feel in September, write it down, and figure out what is the minimum that needs to get done to achieve that.
have you tried attending a session at MSC, or your favorite gym online? I mean, I know a lot of us are burnt out on the interwebs, but the reality is that not having a commute allows you train with coaches you’d never have access to before. And if your facility has zoom options (..ya know...like MSC does :)...sign up HERE to schedule time to chat and here more). It could allow you to save loads of time on a commute and attend sessions that are much more convenient for you.
REMEMBER - THIS IS NOT FOREVER.
Seasons change, schedules change, YOU HAVE TO CHANGE if you want to continue to reach your goals for a short time for the long term benefit.
